The Learning Center! is a North Carolina Charter School
The Learning Center!, which operated for fourteen years as a private school, was granted approval as a North Carolina charter school in 1997. It was one of the state’s first charter schools, a distinction shared by only 33 other schools statewide. Charter schools are deregulated public schools of choice and were begun to provide educational alternatives for parents and students and to serve as a proving ground for innovative approaches to education. The school is governed by a board of directors who hold monthly public meetings. An elected parent representative serves as liaison between parents and the board, and the board encourages your attendance and impute at meetings.
You will observe right away that The Learning Center! is different. We are not a traditional school. Our classes are all multi-grade groupings, that fluctuate from year to year to accommodate student needs and changes in enrollment. Students are given individual instruction and assignments based on their ability levels and interests. Our environment is very fluid; students have choices about where they may work. Often you will find older students mentoring younger ones. We work toward creating a sense of community and instilling in our students a sense of responsibility to that community.
