Scottish Heritage Week at John C. Campbell Folk School
September 7-13
September brings Scottish Heritage Week at the Folk School, and there's still time to sign up for a class. During this week, most classes have a Scottish theme and much of the evening programming and meals served relate to the Scottish/Irish cultural influence on the Apppalachian Mountains region. Wearing your kilt is optional (but highly encouraged!) while taking part in a class during the week:
- Learn about Sir David Brewster, Scottish inventor of the kaleidoscope (and learn to make a kaleidoscope too!).
- Make functional Celtic ironwork that was used in ancient Scotland.
- Practice traditional Scottish tunes on the folk harp.
- Cook 18th-century foods from Scotland and Ireland over a open hearth.
- Weave a Scottish tartan!

These classes and many more will run the week of September 7-13. If you're interested in exploring Scottish culture, join us during this fun, interesting, and tasty week at the Folk School.
If you want to stay an extra day, the end of the week brings the annual Appalachian Highland Games in Andrews, NC on Saturday, September 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring semi-professional games with sheaf, hammer and caber toss; a border collie demonstration; bagpipes; crafts; and a colorful parade of tartans. It's an event not to be missed!
