Day Use Areas in Macon County North Carolina

Visit Macon County in the Western North Carolina Mountains


Cliffside Lake

Eight short trails between 0.5 miles to 1.5 miles. Bathhouse with cold showers. May 1st - October 31st.

Directions: From Highlands, take US 64 west for 4.5 miles, turn right at sign

Standing Indian

Walk many popular hiking trails, including several that connect to Appalachian Trail. Picnic Shelter.

Directions: From Franklin, take US 64 west for 9 miles, turn left on old US 64 and follow signs.

Wayah Bald

Enjoy panoramic views from the historic fire tower. Crossed by Appalachian & Bartram Trails

Directions: From Franklin, take US 64 west, turn right on old US 64 to SR 1310 (Wayah Road). Turn right on FR 69 (gravel) for 4.5 miles
